Chad Brown - Pastor
Hello, and welcome to Peace Lutheran Church where All Are Welcome, All Belong. I am privileged to pastor this faith community. My wife is Kelly and our twins, Jack and Abby, who are 10 years old and in the 4th grade. We are excited to meet you and do life together.
A bit about me, although I grew up in Southern California, my family moved to Fort Dodge Iowa where I graduated from high school, and then attended the University of Iowa getting a business degree. I moved to the Twin Cities and worked for Honeywell for many years. While in Minneapolis I earned a graduate degree and became a psychologist practicing In-Home Family Therapy. After 20 years in Minnesota, I moved to Sacramento California to become the music minister of a small Lutheran church, and to work with Lutheran Social Services serving the homeless population. I met Kelly in Sacramento and we were married and started our family. As many of you know having kids changes your life and your priorities, so I chose to be the stay at home parent, (Mr. Mom), which has been wonderful, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. In 2010 we moved to Des Moines and have fallen in love with the city and its people. During this time I took the opportunity to answer the call to go to seminary and continue my work in the church.
I love church and its role in our lives and in the community. I love the music and art that come from faith communities, both old and new. And I have a deep passion to serve others, care for the earth, and to work for justice and peace. In the end we belong together as a faith community, becoming disciples of Christ, transforming to become more like Christ. So that’s why we worship, and live, and love, and proclaim the gospel; because Jesus is the light and life of the world.
Grace and Peace to you.
Sherry Maakestad - Faith Formation Director
Sherry Maakestad coordinates Peace's Faith Formation programs, with the help of a Youth Assistant, and many committed lay people working within the youth and education programs.
She started in this capacity on October 1, 2007 after moving back to Pella with her husband, Mike, and three daughters, Hannah, Kirsten, and Sara.
Sherry's hometown is Atlantic, Iowa, and she received her B.S. in Child Development from Iowa State University. She also has numerous years of experience in teaching kindergarten, directing preschools, directing youth programs within the Lutheran church, and serving in a Family Ministry capacity.
Sherry followed the call to work at Peace because she is so passionate about sharing her faith and encouraging others in the Christian faith. She feels especially called to serve within family ministries because of the great need to offer parents resources and support both in parenting and in raising children in homes where faith is nurtured.
Laura Wielard - Office Administrator
Laura Wielard serves as our current office administrator at Peace Lutheran. She enjoys meeting new faces and discovering family connections. Laura works part-time in our office as she is a wife to Mike, and Mom to two great children, 15- and 10-years old.
God has blessed Laura with many experiences in personnel and food service management, church music interests, and a piano studio. Recipe-experimenting and walking are therapeutic outlets when time allows.
