Sunday School

Sunday School Curriculum

Core Curriculum Summary – Currently, Peace Lutheran Church uses the Witness Sunday school curriculum published by Augsburg Fortress for three-year-olds through fifth grade. The Witness Sunday school curriculum is a great way for kids to “Learn from the Bible to Live the good news.” What is the good news? God promises, provides, and is present throughout human history. God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is for us and with us, wherever we are and in whatever we do. God is also for others - in our homes, in our neighborhoods, in our churches, and all around the world. That is news worth sharing!

Witness provides a two-year semester structure (Year Red and Year Blue) of well-loved Bible stories that tell the salvation story each year. The curriculum repeats key themes and stories every two years to enhance Biblical literacy and add a layer of depth with each encounter.

During the fall semester the children will hear stories about God’s active involvement in their lives and in the lives of many people from the Old Testament. They will also hear the good news of the birth of Jesus Christ. In the spring semester the children will encounter New Testament stories about Jesus’ life and ministry.

The KNOW, GROW, SHOW session goals match the characteristics of a witness: someone who knows the Word, grows in faith, and shows faith in service. On the back of the children’s weekly leaflet are ideas to help reinforce the session learning and connect with the children at home.

Class Goals – Each grade level is assigned one or more goals to focus on for the year. In addition to the focus goal, each class will review the goals from prior years. The goals are designed to help provide each child with a Biblical understanding and a lifestyle of nurturing faith habits.

Together In Faith – The Education Committee encourages Sunday school classes grades three-year-olds to fifth grade to use the Together In Faith curriculum at some point during the Sunday school year. Parents and other adults are invited to join their children in learning and growing together in Christ for two or three sessions each year at specific milestones in each child’s life.

Living Faith – Each of the seven faith practices (pray, study, worship, invite, encourage, serve, & give) is part of a disciple’s lifestyle. Our goal is to help instill these practices in the daily lives of our children by working on one faith practice per year.

Bible Verses – Each grade is assigned a Bible verse to memorize throughout the Sunday school year.
